Barbie (2023) Movie Review

Barbie opens up with a 2001 Space Odyssey reference and closes with a brilliant montage of women that worked in this film or a close friend/family member of the crew. Even though it is somewhat of a comedy film, it is a film that takes itself very seriously in some parts. Barbie is the best movie I watched this year. From the soundtracks, the costumes, the props, the acting, and to the directing… I loved most of the movie.

Barbie (2023)

Let’s begin with the soundtrack: the Billie Eilish song “What Was I Made for” was so coherent with the scenes it used. You knew it was going to pop up in that particular scene. The director of the movie Greta Gerwig, explains that this song’s instrumental is used in particular scenes of the movie. It was spread throughout the movie. Because of that when it came out in the last scene you didn’t feel it was odd, you felt like a story was completed.

Barbie (2023)

Moving on with the acting: As everyone said, Ryan Gosling’s (Ken) acting was superior, however, I don’t think Margot Robbie’s (Barbie) acting was not any less than his. They were both amazing which is one of the things that makes this movie great.

Barbie (2023)

Let’s talk about the props and the costumes: I think everything the characters wore in this film is worth exhibiting them in a museum. All Barbie’s and Ken’s have unique costumes and characters. There are details behind why the characters wore that particular costume like every Greta Gerwig movie. The set of this movie is like a giant playhouse. Everything seems fake other than the actors. Which gives the movie a unique atmosphere.

Barbie (2023)

The last thing I will talk about is that the atmosphere changes between the real world and Barbie Land. Yes, Greta Gerwig showed very clearly gender differences between Barbie Land and the real world, however since the audience watches most of the movie in this pink world, when the scene changed to the real world the audience felt really uncomfortable. Like the colors were out of place. Like Barbie felt in the patriarchal society.

Barbie (2023)

With the clear message this movie gave, it will definitely get bad criticism from who the movie critiqued. But if you understand the movie, I’m sure that you’ll love it.
