Hi everyone! Today I am going to talk about my favorite movie, La La Land. There are a few musical movies that come this far in the award shows. The director of this movie Damien Chazelle, won the Oscar award, and he was the youngest director to win this award. Besides, I think everybody remembers the chaos at the 2017 Oscars when La La Land was announced as the best movie of the year, but actually, it was a mistake and Moonlight won the award.
I think La La Land did a great job as a musical and as a romantic movie. We all consider movies according to their genre. And we try to avoid that genre. I know a lot of people who hate musicals. But I guarantee you that you are gonna love La La Land even though you don’t like musicals. If anyone likes cinema and movies, then they are gonna like La La Land.
The film opens with a dancing scene. We see everyone in traffic in LA. They just get out of the car and start dancing. I think it can be the best musical opening. You don’t understand what it is and just think this movie sucks like “any other musicals”. But when the scene moves on we see Mia working in a cafe. She is a person with a lot of dreams like her roommates in LA. LA is a big part of the movie. They shot the movie mostly in real places, not in a studio. We see beautiful sunrises and sunsets. We see the seasons change. We see people change. We see places change. I think the “seasons” are a big part of this movie. When the seasons change we can see the contrast of the movie changes. I think we can see the character's psychology change with the seasons.
Let’s talk about Sebastian, I think you can empathize with Sebastian. He is a person who lives alone. Barely making money (his sister taking care of him). He wants to open his own Jazz Club because actually thinks “jazz is dying”. He is very passionate about Jazz. It is basically his personality.
Their meeting is quite strange, we see Sebastian playing Christmas songs in a restaurant. Even though he is a serious artist nobody seems to care about what is playing or not. But his boss wanted him to play only the songs that he gave to Sebastian. He eventually doesn’t care, and with a “magical musical moment,” he starts to play his song. The song that he wrote. The theme song of the movie. And right at that moment, Mia heard the piano playing while she was walking down the street. She is very enchanted to hear that piano playing. She even goes inside the restaurant to see what's happening. After that, we quickly saw that Sebastian was fired because he played his song. He becomes angry and he storms out ignoring Mia. That's how the two main characters of this movie meet. After that “faith” makes them meet again. I think this is a beautiful part of this movie. Even though Sebastian didn’t care about Mia that day, Mia will be his favorite person on earth a couple of months later.
Let’s talk about the climax of this movie -spoilers from now on- we see a scene that I think is one of the best scenes of this movie. Mia dances and the camera turns to Sebastian who plays piano at the moment, and the camera keeps turning and turning. After this beautiful scene, we see one of Sebastian's old mates coming to him and somehow he offers to be in his band. He turns down this offer at first, but if you watched the movie you will know that he is going to accept this offer and maybe make one of the biggest mistakes of his life.
In the closing scene I must say that I was very confused when I saw the "5 years later" title. We suddenly watched another Mia. Somehow it was 5 years, and she had kid already. When she went to Sebastian's club it was one of the saddest parts of this movie. After that, we see if things were not like that. If that friend didn’t come to him at that time. If Mia and Sebastian did not fight because of Sebastian’s new job. If Sebastian went to Paris with Mia. If they got married and had a child.
This movie shows us what can happen with a single change. What can change in our lives in a single moment? What can happen in a second that will change our lives?
