Little Women Review

Hi everyone, today I am going to talk about a movie that many other people liked. A book adaptation, an age-appropriate book, and a movie, an old classic Little Women.

I want to talk a little bit about the topic of this story. The book and the movie simply talk about 4 sisters who lived in the 1860s, Jo, Amy, Meg, and Beth. The sister’s father volunteers for the war and the sisters stay without their father for a long time.

There were a lot of movie adaptations of Little Women, but I want to talk about the latest one in this review which is “Little Women” (2019) by Greta Gerwig. With Greta Gerwig’s amazing style of filming and one of the greatest scenarios combined, the movie got 7.8/10 on IMDb. You may ask, do you even care about IMDb reviews, no I do not, but this is a really good score for an individual movie.

The biggest theme of this movie is feminism. In the world of the 1800s women were not a big part of the world as shown in the movie. We see Jo’s character trying to write little stories, and an actual novel, but the publisher says that she only needs to finish her stories with the hero (who is a woman) either dying or marrying. It is ironic if we think of the literary word of 2022. There are a lot of individual women who do a lot better than dying at the end of the story. A little fun fact for you in the little women book in the end Jo marries even though the author of the book never married. So brilliant Greta Gerwig changes the ending of the movie as we see Jo is not married, but we see her as writing her novel as she was married to be approved by the publisher.

I want to talk about a couple of particular scenes. First of all, the proposal scene with Jo (Saoirse Ronan) and Laurie (Timothee Chalamet) was incredible. It was an outdoor scene. With the conflict between these characters they kept walking and running while talking and fighting even though Laurie was proposing to Jo to marry him. I think if they just stood in front of each other the scene wouldn’t be the same. The conflict between them showed beautifully.

Besides, I like the sisterhood of this movie. For example, there is a scene that Jo, Meg, and Laurie come back from the party (with Meg injured from her ankle), and all sisters and their mom help her immediately while talking as Laurie admires them. I think the audience is like Laurie in this scene because you just don’t think anything other than “I love them”. Because you can see the warmth in their heart. Greta Gerwig shot this scene with a fireplace and yellow lighting which gives the same emotion.

With the conflicts and with the sisterhoods this movie is one of my favorites. I think this movie is a 8/10. I hope you like it too.
