Notting Hill (1999) Movie Review

Why we don’t watch movies like Notting Hill anymore? The vibes of the rom-com movies before the 2010s are all the same, and they all give the same enjoyment to the watcher. However, movies like this are not more than 10 after the 2010s.

So here is the review of one of my favorite movies Notting Hill, "Notting Hill," directed by Roger Michell and released in 1999, remains a timeless classic in the romantic comedy genre. This heartwarming film, set in the picturesque neighborhood of Notting Hill in London, is a delightful blend of humor, charm, and genuine emotion.

Notting Hill

Hugh Grant stars as William Thacker, a mild-mannered bookstore owner whose uneventful life takes an unexpected turn when Anna Scott, played by Julia Roberts, a famous American actress, stumbles into his store one day. What follows is a captivating tale of an unlikely romance between an ordinary man and a celebrity. Even though this script sounds cliche, with the brilliant acting and cinematography the film pulls you in it.

Notting Hill

Personally, I watched this movie in a movie theatre, and even though there is literally no point in watching a rom-com in a movie theatre, I can say that it made the movie even better. The atmosphere of watching a movie in a movie theatre makes it a lot better since you are more involved and never distracted. In these years we only tend to watch a maximum of 2-minute videos because of TikTok and Instagram. When you watch a movie in your home, it is very hard not to look at your phone every five minutes because you can’t focus. I think TikTok and Instagram are the biggest things that kill cinema culture. Yes, Notting Hill is a very easy film to watch, but when you watch more complicated movies and just fly away you don’t understand anything. Which is really bad.

Notting Hill

"Notting Hill" is filled with memorable supporting characters, including William's quirky flatmates and his quirky, eccentric sister, Honey, portrayed by the talented Rhys Ifans, who steals several scenes with his comedic timing. Emma Chambers also shines as William's witty and supportive friend, Honey. To conclude, the actor choices in this film couldn’t be better.

The backdrop of Notting Hill, with its colorful houses and eclectic residents, adds to the film's charm. The location becomes almost like a character in itself, providing a rich and vibrant setting for the unfolding romance, and it helps a lot with cinematography.

Notting Hill

In conclusion, "Notting Hill" is a timeless romantic comedy that has earned its place among the classics of the genre. Its enduring appeal lies in its endearing characters, witty dialogue, and the genuine chemistry between its two leads. The movie gives absolute enjoyment to the watcher, and you want to watch it again after finishing it.
